More than one thousand homeless people attended a special event hosted by Homeless Connect in Edmonton this weekend.

Hundreds of volunteers offered their time and skills to provide medical care, dental services, hairdressing, meals and advice about housing and employment to homeless people from the Edmonton area.

The event is held twice a year and attracts large crowds; this time, people started queuing from 5:30 am and more than one thousand people turned up at the Shaw Conference Centre.

Susan McGee, from Homeless Trust Edmonton, said that the event had been a great success and thanked volunteers for giving up their time. The aim of the event is to offer needy people help and support and provide access to basic services, which they would otherwise not be able to afford.

For many people, the event enables them to access services for the first time in several years; Stephanie Armstrong said she had not seen a dentist in 10 years and was delighted to be able to see a dentist and have her teeth cleaned professionally at the clinic.
