The United Arab Emirates Red Crescent Authority has launched a Public Service Screening Programme, to provide free dental screening for people on low incomes and vulnerable people.

The three-day programme, which took place last week, enabled more than 150 people to benefit from a free dental examination. The screening clinic was organised in collaboration with Ambulatory Healthcare Services at Abu Dhabi Health Services Company.

Dr Rana Saoud Abu Karsh, a doctor working at the event, said that patients had come with a range of oral health conditions, including gum disease, decay and severely damaged teeth, which required extraction.

Patients were treated at mobile dental units and each doctor was supported by a team of four dental assistants. Patients of different nationalities attended the clinic and the majority of those who attended were poor workers.

The Mobile Basic Screening Survey Project was developed by the Operations Team at the Ambulatory Health Services and was established to promote oral health, educate people about oral health and assess the needs of the community. The primary aim is to establish the needs of the community and to collect data and once this data has been collected, measures can be introduced to cater for people’s needs and improve standards of oral health.
