Free dental clinic helps hundreds

A one-off free dental clinic has helped hundred of patients in Lansing, Michigan.

The eight hour event took place at the CareFree Dental Clinic yesterday; during the course of the event, almost $50,000 dollars worth of free emergency dental treatment was given to patients in need.

The emergency clinic was set up to treat patients in severe pain who would otherwise not be able to afford treatment; without the help of the clinic, they could have ended up in hospital with huge medical bills.

The Caring Hands event was held to help needy patients and raise money for the CareFree clinic; however, a sum of just $50 was collected during the day. The clinic is supported almost entirely by donations and would struggle to stay open if donations dried up; patients pay for treatment but they receive a 75 percent discount, meaning the clinic takes in very little money.

The CareFree dental clinic stays open all year round but normally has a waiting list of around six months; the one-off Caring Hands event was held to help people with severe pain who needed immediate treatment.

The length of the queue outside the surgery summed up the difficult situation facing millions of people across America; yesterday, more than a hundred people queued for an appointment at the clinic. The clinic was due to close at 5pm but staff stayed on to help more people and by the end of the day, 110 patients had been treated.
