Fort Wayne Dentist Making a Difference in Honduras
A dentist from Fort Wayne is making a difference to people in need, after setting up a non-profit organisation in Honduras.
Dr Thomas Blake first visited Honduras in 2000 and decided to set up a charity to help provide dental care for those living in poor communities. Sonrisas Siempre was established in 2009 after many trips to Honduras and Dr Blake is now recruiting other dentists and dental volunteers to help out.
This month, ten other dentists and four dental assistants on another mission to Honduras will join Dr Blake. The team will be treating students at three orphanages and visiting remote communities in the mountains.
Dr Blake has been collecting dental equipment in a nearby warehouse and soon the team will start packing and loading the goods, a process that is expected to take some time, as the dentist has managed to collect an entire dental clinic. The equipment will be loaded onto a 40 foot shipping container, which will be bound for Honduras. The first task when the team arrives will be to construct the clinic, which will remain in place and serve hundreds of local people for many years to come.
