Formby Dental Practice Supports Mouth Cancer Action Month

A Formby dental practice is supporting Mouth Cancer Action Month by offering free oral cancer screening in November.

Elbow Lane Dental Care will be offering free screening checks every Wednesday afternoon throughout November as part of a national effort to raise awareness of oral cancer. Appointments will be available from 1pm and anyone is welcome.

Mouth cancer affects more than 6,000 people in the UK every year; however, awareness remains low and dentists around the country are joining forces with mouth cancer charities in November to educate people about the causes and symptoms and encourage them to get checked out.

Dentist Dan Collins said the team is delighted to get behind the campaign and is hoping to get everyone talking about mouth cancer and taking advantage of free screening sessions. The team is asking patients to wear blue lips stickers and take selfies to show their support for the campaign and get more people involved. They are hoping that this fun and interactive approach will reach a broad audience and encourage more people to go to a screening session.

Dr Nigel Carter OBE, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, thanked Elbow Lane Dental Care for supporting the campaign and encouraged the public to get behind it and visit their local dentist this November for a screening test. Although moth cancer can sometimes be detected during routine check-ups, screening is a means of spotting signs that may not yet be visible to the naked eye; it helps to ensure that cases are diagnosed at an early stage when there is a much higher chance of treatment being successful.
