A spectator has been jailed after head-butting a 5-a-side player and leaving him with dental injuries.

Dwaine Riley, a gardener from Derbyshire, was jailed for 8 months at Derby Crown Court. Riley’s attack had given the victim a dead tooth and a dental bill totalling £600 after head-butting him after a football match at Pride Park.

The 30 year old was described as “something of a bully” by judge Andrew Hamilton after reviewing his criminal record. Riley was jailed for eight months after admitting to charges of assault causing actual bodily harm. He said that he had become frustrated after watching the player and his team during a match against the team he was supporting.

Riley went to the reception area after the match and asked a player where his team mate had gone. When told that he had already left Riley head-butted the victim without any warning.

Prosecuting, Alex Wolfson, said Riley had failed to control his emotions and lashed out at an innocent victim, causing him a great deal of pain and injuries that would cost him a significant amount of money to treat.

Judge Hamilton said he would expect to hand out much longer sentences if Mr Riley continued to behave in such an aggressive manner. In defence, Nicola Hunter, said Riley had become frustrated during the match and lashed out without thinking, an action which he regretted and was deeply sorry about.
