Fears For The Future Of Leven Dental Practice

Dental patients in Leven, East Riding, are worried after it was revealed that their local dental practice could close if the dentists are unable to find new premises within the next six months.

Dr Alan Sykes and partners, the owners of the property, have confirmed that they wish to terminate the lease in six months time to use the space for storage, which will leave the current dentists no choice but to close the practice if they are unable to find alternative premises.

John and Helen Essam are now trying to locate suitable spaces for the dental practice and are working with NHS England, North Yorkshire and Humber.

The decision taken by the doctors has angered local patients, as they will face leaving the village to see a dentist and are currently very content with the fact that the village of Leven offers a GP practice, a dental surgery and a pharmacy. Many are worried that the practice will be forced to close, as the alternative looks expensive, with the cost of converting an empty space into a fit-for-purpose surgery likely to be significant.

The practice is currently located in a listed building and therefore there are limitations with renovations and extension and practice manage of the GP surgery, Joy Dawson, explained that the surgery needs the extra space, as it is not possible to extend. The pharmacy, which is located on the ground floor of the building, is currently very small, but it performs a very important role in the village and it is essential that the surgery provides the services local people need. Ms Dawson added that the decision has not been taken lightly.

Mr and Mrs Essam have run the local dental surgery for 14 years; they have not yet commented on the situation but are working with health bosses to try and find a new site for the practice.

I have been a patient at the practice for 14 years or more and have been very happy with the standard of care. The location is ideal as it serves a need in the community.
