Ely dental nurse celebrates 40 years at the same practice

A dental nurse from Ely is celebrating a monumental milestone after spending 40 years at the same practice. Debbie Lawrence joined the team at St Mary’s Dental Practice in Ely in September 1981.

Debbie started work straight after leaving school and has never looked back. When the practice changed hands, she stayed at the surgery and has spent four decades treating patients, often seeing several members of the same families.

Debbie said that she was “so lucky” to find a job she loved after school and she is hugely grateful for the opportunity to spend her career at a practice that has wonderful staff and patients. Although Debbie has been working for 40 years, she said she still finds every day rewarding and she is fortunate to have made lifelong friends while at the practice.

Over the years, Debbie has worked under four practice owners, but she has relished every challenge and always got on well with her colleagues. The Covid-19 crisis has been perhaps the greatest hurdle the team has ever had to overcome but everyone has pulled together and focused on trying to provide the best possible service for patients.

Mr Trotter, the owner of the practice when Debbie joined in 1981, described her as a “great nurse” and practice manager, Laura Hendry, said that nothing is ever too much for Debbie. She regularly works long hours and even comes in on evenings and weekends to help out if patients need urgent treatment.

Debbie, who is now 56, has no intentions of retiring any time soon and she is looking forward to meeting more people in the years to come and continuing to provide care for patients she has known for a long time.
