A group of children from a nursery in East Grinstead paid their local dentist a visit recently to learn about the importance of good oral hygiene.

Children from Fledglings Day Nursery visited the St James Dental Practice to learn about how to look after their teeth. The children were aged between two and five years old and during their visit they were allowed to climb into the dental chair and see what it’s like to go to the dentist. The children also used mirrors to have a look inside their mouths and see their teeth and learned all about which foods are good for their teeth and which to avoid.

Principal dentist Rahul Nehra said it’s important to get involved in the local community and devote time to educating children and adults. This will help raise standards of oral health and ensure people have the information they need to make positive oral health choices.

The visit, which was organised as part of a national campaign to improve children’s oral health, was a great success. The children thoroughly enjoyed meeting the dentists, learning about their teeth and looking around the dental surgery. The aim of the initiative is to teach young people about the importance of looking after their teeth and encourage them to adopt simple measures, such as cleaning their teeth twice a day and going to the dentist every six months. This will reduce their risk of developing dental diseases.
