An educational event will take place in the city next week to celebrate National Smile Month.

The informative session is designed to teach parents and children about the importance of oral health and oral hygiene and will take place at the Sure Start centre on Wickham Street. The session will be packed with information, advice and tips and will be fun and interactive.

Many people don’t realise how important it is to look after their teeth and gums and preventable oral health illnesses, including tooth decay, are increasing amongst young children. It is important for children to learn how to look after their teeth; it is also important that they learn about the impact their diet has on their mouth, with many children eating a large amount of sweets, biscuits and cakes, which contribute to cavities and weaker enamel on the teeth.

National Smile Month is a national campaign, which has been launched in order to raise awareness of oral health across the country. The event is aimed at children but it is hoped that the activities and informative sessions will also encourage parents, teachers and carers to take better care of their teeth and gums as well.

Dentists are urging parents to encourage their children to adopt a good daily oral hygiene routine from as early an age as possible and limit the amount of sweet foods and fizzy drinks they consume. It is also beneficial for children to see their dentist from an early age; this will allow them to get used to going to the dentist, which will help to reduce the risk of them suffering from dental phobia in the future.
