New College Durham has launched a new dental nurse apprenticeship scheme in a bid to help students make the leap into a career in dentistry.

The course, which will start in September, is designed to provide student dental nurses with the theoretical and practical knowledge they need to succeed in the industry. In addition to classroom study, students will also be gaining on the job experience working at local dental practices, which will enable them to hone their practical skills and develop their communication and people skills.

The Dental Nursing Advanced Apprenticeship enables students to earn a wage while the study and they will spend one day a week at college and the rest of the week in the workplace. The qualification is equivalent to a level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing.

The college’s curriculum manager, Claire Kelly, said that the college is very honoured to be offering a new course in dental nursing, a very worthy career. Nurses provide vital support to dentists and help them with a range of different jobs and procedures and it is really exciting for the college to be working with local dental clinics to teach and nurture the next generation of dental nurses.

So far, two practices have joined forces with the college and course leaders are looking for more to come on board. The college will be working with Framwellgate Dental Surgery and Durham City Smiles.

There are still places available for the course beginning in September and anyone who is interested in applying is advised to contact the college.
