Dundee orthodontic firm confirms expansion plans

The owner of an orthodontic firm based in Dundee has confirmed plans to expand the current premises as part of a £300,000 growth project.

Rhu McKelvey, co-founder and principal orthodontist at Beam Orthodontics, revealed proposals to move into the property next to the existing clinic on South Tay Street. When the business was first established, the building was used as a church and the congregation was relocating to different premises. At the time, the aim was to eventually move into the ground floor, and now, the move is set to proceed. The additional space, which was previously occupied by a café, will enable the team to increase the number of patients by adding three extra dental chairs.

Orthodontics is an area of dentistry that is growing in stature, as demand for braces among teens and adults increases. The practice already has an NHS waiting list and the extra chairs will enable the team to treat more patients and reduce waiting times. As selfies become commonplace and people are exposed to images of celebrities with perfect smiles, more and more people want to undergo orthodontic treatment and the expansion is a means of keeping up with demand.

Mr McKelvey said that he was hoping to add to the team in the coming months, but stressed that recruiting specialists isn’t always easy, despite the fact that the clinic is located around the corner from a dental school.
