Recent findings from the Designed to Smile programme have shown a 6 percent drop in the amount of five-year-olds experiencing tooth decay in Wales.

A recent report has revealed that less children in Wales are suffering with tooth decay, and general levels of dental disease are decreasing.

According to the Welsh Government and the University of Cardiff, nearly 60 percent of children aged 3 to 6 took part part in their Designed to Smile programme in 2014.

1,452 schools and 91,000 children in Wales had access to education in oral health sessions, which also held some focus on healthy food choices and nutrition.

Although it’s too soon to determine the whole impact of the programme, the most recent figures depict a 6 percent drop in the number of 5-year-olds living with dental decay in comparison with this time last year.

The report did find that schools in some areas of Wales were dropping out of the scheme due to factors such as poor inspections and changes in head teacher.
