A mum from Dorset received a devastating cancer diagnosis following a routine trip to the dentist.

Janice Smith, 57, from Christchurch, visited her dentist for a follow-up appointment after having dental implants fitted. During the scan, her dentist noticed a dark patch and recommended further investigations. Tests revealed that Janice had three brain tumours and a tumour in her chest.

Janice had one of the tumours on her brain removed, but doctors are unable to operate on the other two due to their location.

Robbie, Janice’s son, said that everything had happened very quickly. Janice was called in for an MRI scan and just a few hours later, the family was told that she had multiple tumours. Doctors believe that the tumours started to grow in 2021 and unfortunately, they are aggressive, which means that treatment options are limited.

Janice’s family have come together to care for her while she undergoes chemotherapy and they have also launched a fundraiser to take her on one final holiday. She drew up a bucket list and has managed to enjoy days out with her family while going through treatment. She was forced to cancel going to a Tom Grennan concert in March due to feeling unwell after a chemotherapy treatment session but is determined to tick off as many entries on the list as possible.

The family has already raised £2,000 for a holiday in the UK. Robbie said that they had been truly humbled by the generosity and kindness of those who have donated. He described his mum as “the purest soul” and said that she had forever been his best friend.
