Doncaster School launches Oral Health Campaign

A school in Doncaster is launching a new oral health campaign this week to try and raise awareness of the importance of good oral health and encourage children to get involved in oral hygiene.

Children from Highfields Primary School will be taught about oral hygiene and given advice on cleaning their teeth and healthy eating this week as part of a new initiative which is being supported by NHS Doncaster and Doncaster LINk.

The campaign has been launched in response to statistics, which show that rates of dental decay and oral health issues are higher in Doncaster than average. At a meeting with representatives from Doncaster LINk, local residents from Highfields raised concerns about oral health and said that dentistry was an important issue for local people.

Dr Tony Baxter, Director of Public Health in Doncaster, said that the campaign was a great idea and hoped that parents and children would get fully involved in the activities taking place at the school this week. Oral health is very important and spending just a few minutes a day brushing the teeth can make a huge difference; decay is preventable and a good oral hygiene routine can save children from suffering pain and will help to improve their performance at school.

Dr Baxter said that they key aims of the campaign were to encourage children to brush their teeth twice a day, urge them to cut down on sugary foods and drinks and ensure that parents take their children to see their dentist at least once every twelve months for a check-up.
