A Metro Transit dog will now be able to have extensive dental work, thanks to donations from the public.

Blu, a 3 year old Malnois, requires dental treatment, including 3 root canals and 4 crowns, but his handler, Steve Morrison, a Metro police officer was unable to afford the treatment, which was quoted at $6,800. Mr Morrison asked Metro authorities for assistance with paying for Blu’s dental care, but his requests were refused.

After hearing that he would not be able to get any help with the cost of Blu’s treatment, Mr Morrison set up a Facebook page to ask people for small donations towards the bills. The story was picked up by Fox 5 and since then, donations have been flooding in.

Blu featured on the news bulletin and his plight obviously pulled at the public’s heart strings, with the Morrison’s receiving more than $11,000 in donations in just a few hours; the target for treatment was reached in just 10 minutes after Blu appeared on the television.

Blu has suffered extensive dental damage as a result of biting down on the metal grating in the police car, but Mrs Morrison believes that one he has the dental work he will be back to full fitness and is expected to work for the next 12 years. Mrs Morrison said that the family had been touched by people’s kindness and support.

In a statement issued last week, a spokeswoman for the Metro said that there is a decreasing presence for police dogs in the force and once one is unable to work they are allowed to retire. Mrs Morrison said that she was disappointed that they were happy to leave Blu in his current condition and added that she was unsure whether Blu would continue to work after he has had dental treatment.
