Dewsbury MP calls for improved access to NHS dentistry, as Ravensthorpe’s only surgery is set to close

Dewsbury MP, Paula Sheriff, has called for urgent action to improve access to NHS dentistry in her constituency, after it was confirmed that the last remaining surgery in Ravensthorpe is set to close.

Ms Sheriff described the news that the Ravensthorpe Dental Surgery will close on July 12th as “terrible” and said that she is now seeking immediate action to ensure that residents are not left without the means to see a local dentist. The practice, which is run by Dr Khurrum Hamid, is the town’s only practice, and the announcement is particularly worrying due to existing access issues and high rates of childhood dental disease.

Ms Sheriff said that the area had long been under-served, and stressed that losing dental services was a huge blow. The charity Dentaid is already providing care for those who can’t register with a dentist in Dewsbury, and demand far outweighs supply. Ms Sheriff has been campaigning for improved access to services in the town for several years, and she has vowed to step up her campaign in light of the impending closure.
