A Dereham dentist has downed his drill after spending 37 years at the same practice.

Mike Edgecombe has been tending to the smiles of Dereham residents since 1982, caring for several members of the same families and watching generations come and go. Dr Edgecombe, 60, said that he was sad to be leaving Wellington House Dental Practice, but added that he was looking forward to travelling more and devoting more time to his hobby of birdwatching.

Dr Edgecombe, who is originally from Cheshire, launched the Dereham practice after qualifying from university and moving from London. Over the course of the last four decades, he has seen the field of dentistry evolve beyond belief, and hailed the modern era as an incredibly exciting time for dentists and patients.

Thirty years ago, people approaching old age had a very slim chance of keeping their natural teeth, and this is one of the most promising areas of change. It’s now not uncommon for older people to have healthy, natural smiles, and this is undoubtedly contributing to better quality of life. The range of treatments and services available and developments in techniques and training have also made a huge difference to the working day of dental professionals and the results dentists are capable of achieving.

Dr Edgecombe has been an integral part of the community, and he said that he will miss colleagues and patients greatly. He plans to keep in touch, and has absolutely no worries that the practice has been left in safe hands with a loyal and long-serving team.

After finishing work on the 2nd April, Dr Edgecombe is looking forward to pursuing his interests and he is also hoping to volunteer for charities that run dental programmes overseas in countries like Nepal.
