A dentist from Derby is celebrating after being short-listed for a prestigious award.

Ravi Nathwani, from Littleover Dental Practice, has been short-listed for Best young Dentist in the North East at the Dentistry Awards 2012.

Ravi said that his ability to help nervous patients and children to feel relaxed was the reason that he received the nomination. Ravi encounters nervous patients on a regular basis and he spends time with them to help ease their anxiety and make them feel more comfortable. Ravi said that the most important thing when dealing with nervous patients was to keep them informed about every step of the process and to ensure that they understand what is happening.

Ravi said that dental phobia can be caused by many different factors, from a fear of needles to a bad experience in the past and the key is to help patients rationalise the situation and assure them that everything is going to be alright.

Ravi is very popular, especially with younger patients, as he helps to make going to the dentist fun by bringing along a friend, Daisy the cow.

Ravi’s colleague, Pam Jones, said that everyone at the practice is very proud of Ravi and wishing him luck for the awards ceremony; she added that he has achieved a lot in a short space of time and he deserves the nomination.

The ceremony will take place in Leicester tomorrow.
