According to dentists, there are a number of foods, which may appear to be healthy but are actually very harmful for the teeth. One of the most common misconceptions is that tinned fruit is the same as eating normal portions of fruit. Unfortunately, if you thought tucking into a tin of peaches or fruit salad was a healthy alternative to other puddings, this is not the case. Tinned fruit contains a large amount of sugar, which causes the protective enamel surfaces of the teeth to come weaker, increasing the risk of decay and acid erosion.

Fruit juices are another popular ‘healthy’ choice, which are a nightmare for dentists; juices are often packed with sugar and they are also very acidic, which can cause acid erosion, a major cause of damage to the enamel.

Fizzy drinks have become increasingly popular and consumption is at an all-time high; nutritionists and dentists have issued multiple warnings about fizzy drinks because they contain a large amount of sugar and have very little nutritional value.

White bread is another unexpected culprit for decay, as it contains a lot of sugar; choosing wholegrain bread is beneficial both for the teeth and the heart, as well as the digestive system.

Dentists are also eager to point out the oral health risks associated with drinking alcohol in excess; beer and wine contain sugar and alco-pops are absolutely laden with sugars and colours. Drinking is also a risk factor for oral cancer.
