Dentists raise concerns over DIY and illegal whitening, as social media generation seeks perfect smiles

Dentists have raised concerns over the growing popularity of DIY dentistry and the prevalence of illegal tooth whitening providers. In a letter signed by over 1,000 dentists, professionals claim that the social media generation is at risk of damaging their dental health as a result of trying to achieve the perfect smile.

Dr Tony Kilcoyne, a dentist based in Yorkshire, was responsible for coordinating the signatures. He believes that urgent action needs to be taken to improve access to NHS dentistry and to ensure that people are aware of the legalities of undergoing dental treatment. Tooth whitening is an increasingly popular treatment, especially among young people, but many patients are unaware that treatment offered by a non-dentist is illegal. The General Dental Council (GDC) has already prosecuted several individuals, including those administering treatment in beauty salons and at their own homes.

The letter states that patients are more likely to attempt DIY dentistry as a result of issues related to getting an NHS dental appointment. There’s also growing pressure for young people to look good, with a perfect smile the top of many Instagram users’ wish-lists. As more and more people are eager to achieve a bright white, beautiful, selfie-ready smile, the public is at risk of being exposed to illegal practitioners without realising the potential risks. Tooth whitening is a dental treatment and should, therefore, only be provided by dental professionals who are registered with the GDC.

To reduce risks and protect patients, dentists are calling for the government to increase spending on NHS dental services. Dental professionals are also keen to spread the message that dental services provided by those who do not have the relevant qualifications or expertise are illegal.
