Dentists issue warnings over cosmetic dentistry as Love Island contestants display bright white smiles

Dentists have issued a warning over cosmetic dentistry, as ITV’s hit dating show Love Island returns to screens.

Many of the contestants on the current show and previous series can be seen sporting bright white smiles, and dentists are eager to encourage viewers looking to follow suit to proceed with caution. Some of the most popular treatments, for example, veneers, require lifelong maintenance and involve intensive preparation work, which may not be ideally suited to young people. London dentist, Dr Christopher Orr, said that viewers should always consider treatments carefully, especially those that involve invasive techniques.

One of this year’s contestants, Connor, has received a lot of attention in the press due to his iridescent smile, which he admitted was the result of a trip to a dental clinic in Thailand. The appearance of pristine pearly whites on programmes like Love Island is likely to trigger an increase in the popularity of cosmetic dentistry, and Dr Orr is keen to ensure that people are aware of the processes involved and the potential risks, especially when undergoing treatment overseas.

Dental tourism has become very popular in recent years, largely due to the potential savings on offer, but British dentists are urging patients to be wary. Quality standards in other countries might not be as high as in the UK and regulation may be different. Although fees are lower, the cost of correcting botched treatment is likely to be more expensive.

For those who are considering cosmetic dentistry, Dr Orr recommends organising a consultation with an experienced dentist to learn more about the treatment process, the effects of different treatments and the finance options available.
