Dentists in Wales Unsure When to Refer Cases of Child Neglect

Sample News Big

A new study carried out by researchers at Cardiff University has revealed that many dentists in Wales don’t have enough confidence to refer cases of child neglect to social services.

The report suggests that many dental professionals lack the training to give them confidence to decide whether or not to refer children with severe dental health problems to social services. According to the study, some struggle to determine when oral health issues cross the line and veer into the territory of neglect and abuse.

The findings of the study are set to be revealed at a meeting of oral health professionals in Hirwuan, Rhonnda Cynon Taff, today (15th May).

Results were compiled based on replies from 50 dentists, 50 paediatric nurses and  50 paediatricians and the overriding sentiment was that professionals are able to spot potential signs of abuse, but lack the confidence to take cases further.

In response to the findings, there are calls for further training for doctors and dentists in the area of child protection and dealing with child neglect and increased support for health professionals dealing with children who may display signs of neglect. There are also suggestions for joint training programmes for paediatricians and dentists.
