A Bradford dentist has urged people to learn first aid after saving his brother’s life; dentist Dr Shabir Bashir saved his brother, Rangzab after he went into cardiac arrest.

Dr Shabir Bashir was helped by dental nurse, Uznah Chowdery, when his brother collapsed and fell at the Beckside Road Dental Practice; Rangzab had been working when he collapsed to the ground, hitting his head on the sink in the bathroom. When they heard the crash, Dr Bashir and Miss Chowdery rushed to the bathroom to see what had happened and once they had forced the door open they found Rangzab Bashir lying on the floor surrounded by blood.

Dr Bashir moved his brother in order to assess him and checked his airways, breathing and circulation; when he noticed that there was no pulse and Mr Bashir was not breathing, Dr Bashir started CPR. Unfortunately, CPR was unsuccessful, but paramedics arrived on the scene quickly and Mr Bashir was taken to A&E, where he was cared for by the resuscitation team.

Members of staff at the Accident and Emergency Department managed to start Mr Bashir’s heart again 55 minutes after he suffered cardiac arrest but warned that the chance of survival was only 10 percent. Mr Bashir was in a coma for ten days after the incident and the prognosis was poor, with a risk of kidney failure and brain damage.

Mr Bashir has now been discharged from hospital and is making a good recovery; however, he has had to have an implant placed in his heart to prevent further arrests.

Dr Bashir said that it was fortunate that his brother collapsed at the practice, where he was tended to quickly; dentists at the practice carry out first aid training once a year in association with Bradford Royal Infirmary. Dr Bashir has now called for everyone to take the time to learn first aid, as you never know when you could be faced with a life or death situation; he added that he has the training as a result of his job, but first aid courses are accessible to everyone.
