Dentist Issue Warning In Light Of Sugary Drinks Facts

Dentists have issued a warning about the sugar content of the nation’s favourite drinks.

Investigations have revealed that many of the drinks we love contain a vast amount of sugar and even those branded as ‘healthy’ are hiding numerous spoonfuls of sugar.

Researchers found that a coffee sold by high street chain, Starbucks, contained as much sugar as ten bowls of Golden Grahams cereal, while a fruit smoothie had the same sugar content as three and a half Krispy Kreme doughnuts. White grape juice was found to contain more sugar than 4 glazed Krispy Kreme doughnuts and a bottle of freshly squeezed orange juice from Pret a Manger contained the same amount of sugar as 13 McVitie’s Hobnob biscuits.

Ribena is one of the most popular cordial drinks in the UK, but you may change your mind when you hear that a 500ml bottle contains more sugar than a can of coke and 13 Oreo cookies. Flavoured water, often considered a healthy choice, can also be misleading; one bottle of This Water lemon and lime water contains the same amount of sugar as two Rice Krispie Squares.

Sugary drinks are terrible news for the teeth, which are already low down the list of many people’s priorities when it comes to health. When you eat or drink sugary foods or drinks, the bacteria in the mouth feed off the sugar, causing them to release harmful plaque acids, which attack the protective tooth enamel; once the enamel is worn, the tooth is susceptible to damage, infection and decay. Drinking sugary drinks throughout the day means that the teeth are under constant attack. Dentists advise people to drink water during the day and to ensure they take in the recommended daily intake of calcium.
