Dentist from Sheffield Supports New Call on Sugar

A dentist from Sheffield is supporting recent calls for sugar consumption cuts in order to reduce the rising rates of both obesity and tooth decay.

Principal of One80dental, Nigel Rosenbaum from Totley, is backing the new proposal from the World Health Organisation. The draft guidance calls for individuals to reduce their daily sugar intake by half, reducing the total energy intake from 10 per cent to 5 per cent. This amount is equal to six teaspoons of sugar per day.

Dr Rosenbaum, who also works at Sheffield University as a clinical educator in implant dentistry, feels that the most tragic thing about tooth decay, which can be painful and cause people a lot of upset, is that it can so easily be prevented.

He says that he would greatly welcome a campaign to educate both parents and children about tooth decay, for example clearer labels and food and drinks. However, he also states that it’s not just the volume of sugary foods and drinks that children that causes the problem, it’s the continuous amount of consumption throughout the hours of the day.

Studies published by BMC Public Health journal show that sugar is the most prominent factor when it comes to tooth decay’s development. It’s thought that an increase from almost 0 per cent to 5 per cent of sugar in children doubles the prevalence of tooth decay.
