A dentist that was convicted and imprisoned for defrauding the NHS for treatments over 6 years and worth hundreds of thousands of pounds has been ordered to pay £360,000 in compensation in a proceeds of crime hearing brought to Guildford Crown Court.

Mark Walewski, a dentist who previously was the manager of the New Dental Surgery in Surrey, admitted four counts of fraud, for which he was jailed for three years in February 2016. The fraud he took part in was charging the NHS for treatment he had already charged patients for or simply did not do, making more than £222,000 in the process.

The court had heard that Walewski had made these false claims from 2006 to 2012, and had an annual income of £150,000 and an NHS contract worth £340,000. He was charged with over 21 charges, and admitted to obtaining money transferred by deception (two counts) as well as abusing his position to commit fraud (two counts).

Over 6,600 fraudulent claims were made, including one particularly egregious claim was made for a dental examination of a baby who was 17 days old, long before they would have grown any teeth.

The New Dental Surgery has since been taken over and is now operated by a different dental practice.
