Dental Treatment Disgusts Women Than Men

A study has found that women find dental treatment more disgusting than men. The survey revealed that women were up to “six times more disgusted” by dental procedures than men.

Researchers found that women were up to six times more disgusted than men when they looked at photographs of scenes from dental treatments and procedures.

Women with dental phobia found it hardest to hide their emotions when looking at the images, while men and women who did not have dental phobia revealed similar responses to the pictures.

Information from the Adult Dental Health Survey revealed that almost half of adults suffer from dental anxiety. Karen Coates, dental advisor at the British Dental Health Foundation, said that with such high numbers of people affected by anxiety, patients should be reassured that they are not alone in feeling nervous when they see a dentist.

Coates added that more and more dentists are offering services, which are aimed at making dental treatment painless and less daunting for nervous patients. Dentists also have training in caring for nervous patients and they are aware that many people they see experience anxiety when they go to a dental clinic.

Coates encouraged nervous patients to talk to their dentist, allow themselves time to get ready for their appointment and agree a signal with their dentist, which means that they would like to take a break.
