A fancy dress prank backfired when four dental students dressed up as Islamic militants and were subsequently stopped by the anti-terror squad.

Four students dressed up as Islamic militants for a joke, but sadly the prank ended in disaster, after terrified patients at Saint-Roch hospital in Nice notified members of staff that they had seen a man dressed up in a djellaba and a turban, carrying a machine gun.

On hearing the alert, police cordoned off the immediate area and sent in 40 officers to stop the ‘terrorists’; after a thorough search of the building, police emerged baffled with no suspects and it wasn’t until they spotted four embarrassed looking students carrying a big with a gun poking out of the top that they cottoned on to what had happened. On closer inspection, officers also found the fake beard, several plastic hand guns and the djellaba.

The students admitted that their prank had misfired straightaway and said that they never thought it would spark such a reaction.

Martine Rajzman, duty head of the university hospital, said that the students looked “forlorn” when they realised the implications of their actions and described the incident as “a bad joke.”

Marcel Authier, head of public security in the local area, said that in the end it had provided everyone with a useful training experience.

The students were taken to the police station for questioning and later released.
