Dental Students can Save you Hundreds of Pounds

Sample News Big

Dental surveys often suggest that cost is the main reason for putting off or cancelling dental appointments, but there are ways of cutting the cost of dental care and visiting dental students is one.

Rebecca Enright, a 41 year old from Solihull has required a lengthy list of treatments over the past thirty years, but she has not paid a penny. Rebecca has had root canal treatment, new crowns, dental bridgework, tooth extraction, hygiene treatments and routine examinations, yet she chose to visit dental students for the work, saving herself thousands of pounds.

Rebecca is one of a growing number of people who are placing their trust in dental students and while some of her friends think she is crazy, she is really happy with her smile and pleased with the service she receives at Wigan Dental Hospital.

According to the British Dental Association around 68 percent of people delay having dental treatment as a result of cost, despite the fact that 1 in 12 people has serious dental problems. Fees in the UK are among the highest in Europe, with the cost of a routine check-up rising to up to £124 at some private clinics.

Professor Damien Walmsley, scientific adviser to the British Dental Association and head of Restorative Dentistry at the University of Birmingham, said that in the past the university had to advertise for patients to allow students to gain clinical experience. However, in the last few years, patient numbers have grown significantly. All services provided by students are free with the exception of dentures.

Rebecca said that she is extremely pleased with the service provided by the dentists under the supervision of highly trained dentists and will continue to visit dental students for any treatment she requires in the future.
