Dental student scoops Commonwealth gold medal
A dental student from India has scooped a surprise gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
Heena Sidhu, a 21 year old dental student from Patiala, won a surprise gold medal in the women’s 10 metre air pistol pairs event; she was joined by partner Annu Raj Singh.
Pundits and experts had tipped competitors Samresh Jung, known as ‘Goldfinger’ and Tejaswini Sawant, the world champion, for the title; however, Sidhu and Singh held their nerve to complete a famous victory at the Karni Singh shooting range.
When questioned about her studies, Heena Sidhu claimed that she enjoyed a good balance between studying and shooting; she said that shooting enabled her to focus and provided an escape from academic work. Unlike her competitors, Sidhu said she spent only a few hours per day training and was consequently able to pull out better performances at competitions and events.
