Dental stem cells could help tackle diabetes

Sample News Big

A new research study has found that dental stem cells could be used to treat type 1 diabetes.

The study, which was carried out at Stempeutics Research Malaysia and the University of Malaya, involved taking stem cells from baby teeth, which were then cultured in specific conditions to enable the cells to turn into cells that are similar to those found in the pancreas. The stem cells were able to generate cells which produce insulin when they are exposed to a higher concentration of glucose.

Type 1 diabetes is much less common than type 2 diabetes; people with type 1 diabetes produce very little or no insulin at all and they must consequently take in insulin either by means of injections or an insulin pump, on a daily basis. This new research study could have identified a potential cure for the disease but further research in this area is required.
