A recent study has found a connection between premature ageing and processed foods.

The study, which was conducted by a team from Harvard School of Dental Medicine and Nagasaki University Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in Japan, has revealed that the components found in processed foods, junk food and fizzy drinks could cause people to age earlier than usual. The project found the consuming a large quantity of phosphates could accelerate the ageing process; in moderation phosphate is harmless, however it can be harmful in larger quantities.

The research team used genetically modified mice known as ‘klotho-knockout’ mice in their study; these mice have a short life span and show the signs of premature ageing. The mice were divided into three groups and fed diets with varying amounts of phosphate. The results of the study confirmed that a diet high in phosphates accelerated the ageing process; the mice that were fed a diet rich in phosphate also died much earlier than the other mice.

Eating a diet that contains a lot of processed, fast food items and carbonated drinks is not just harmful in terms of the ageing process; this kind of diet also contributes to a huge range of health conditions, including cardiovascular disease, strokes, high blood pressure and obesity. Eating an unhealthy diet also contributes to poor oral health and increases the likelihood of people suffering from problems such as tooth decay, gum disease and sensitivity.

The advice from experts is clear; it is important to eat a healthy and balanced diet in order to enjoy a healthy body and mind.
