Dental Problems an Epidemic in Abu Dhabi

Sample News Big

Dentists in Abu Dhabi are treating children as young as 12 months old for decay, prompting a growing fear that some children may lose their permanent teeth during childhood.

Dr Asmat Lone, a dentist working in the capital city, said that dentists are very worried about the state of oral health among children and added that ‘baby bottle syndrome’ is contributing to alarming rates of decay. Many young children are drinking sweet drinks through their bottles during the night, which is causing their front teeth to crumble and fall out. If the baby teeth fall out prematurely this increases the risk of the adult teeth falling out during childhood.

Dr Lone added that many parents do not bring their children to see a dentist until the child I already experiencing pain and by this time, it is usually too late to save the teeth. Regular dental visits will help to reduce rates of decay and dentists are eager for parents to avoid giving their children sugary drinks during the night, when the teeth are weak and susceptible to decay and damage.

A survey carried out last year by Seha, the Abu Dhabi health services company, revealed that two thirds of the 26,000 children surveyed had decay.
