Dental practices in Powys to increase capacity as part of Covid-19 recovery plan

Dental practices in Powys are making more appointments available as part of the Welsh Government’s Covid-19 recovery plan.

Under new guidelines, practices in Powys will see an additional 269 patients per week, Powys Health Board confirmed.

Dental services are under a huge amount of pressure across the UK and increasing capacity will help teams to work through backlogs faster and reduce waiting times for patients.

The government’s Covid recovery plan requires all practices in Wales to take on additional patients to try and improve access to dental services as restrictions ease.

The minimum number of additional patients is calculated according to the value of the NHS contract. In total, Powys dental clinics will be treating an extra 269 patients every week.

A spokesperson for Powys Health Board explained that the new guidelines have been introduced to boost capacity at NHS practices after a long period of closures and restrictions.

Over the last 18 months, all clinics have been working in line with Covid safety measures, which limit patient numbers. As a result of lockdowns and restricted access to appointments, backlogs have formed and many patients are waiting to see a dentist.

Dental teams are currently prioritising patients with urgent dental needs and those who need advice or help can now contact the health board’s new dental helpline. The number is 01597 828815 and the line is open from 9 am until 5 pm on weekdays.
