A dental office manager has been charged with theft following the disappearance of more than $120,000.

The 57 year old woman worked as the dental office manager at a practice in Cottonwood Heights, Salt Lake City for twelve years and then suddenly quit her job. Shortly after the office manager left, one of the dentists noticed that a deposit was $400 short and contacted the bank; he was subsequently told that the office manager had obtained debit cards for both accounts and used $12,000 worth of credit on behalf of the practice. Further investigations revealed that she had taken more than $120,000, including several cash withdrawals from the account and unauthorised cheques.

The dental office manager was responsible for banking, depositing takings and collecting payments; the investigations also revealed that she had gained access to the dentist’s personal account.

When questioned by police, the woman said that she was forced to start “creative financing” to cover the business expenses. She has now been charged with unlawful acquisition of two debit cards, which are third degree felonies. Records also reveal that she has been involved in a number of cases related to debt collection and small claims in the past.
