Dental Nurse Imprisoned for Drug Supply has been struck from the GDC Register

A dental nurse imprisoned for possession and supply of Class B drugs has been told she can no longer work in dentistry after the General Dental Council reached their verdict yesterday following her appearance at Sheffield Crown Court.

Simone Harper, who in 2015 was jailed for three months for supplying cannabis and possessing £3000 worth of drugs “failed to adequately co-operate” with a GDC investigation into her conduct and fitness to practice dentistry. This investigation was triggered by both this prison sentence and two previous cautions in 2011 for possession of Class A and Class B drugs.

A GDC spokesman noted that her convictions could potentially lead to a breach in public confidence in dental services, and that “serious criminal behaviour” of the kind that Ms Harper was convicted of is difficult to remedy.

He continued to note that the evidence provided to the professional conduct committee points to a complete lack of insight from her into how Simone’s conduct would affect her practice and colleagues and how it could affect the public’s trust in both them and the dental profession as a whole.

After the hearing, Harper has been suspended, with 28 days to appeal her case before she is removed from the register and will not be allowed to work as a dental nurse.
