Dental Nurse Encourages Young People to Take Advantage of Apprenticeships

A dental nurse who has a degree in drama and theatre studies is encouraging other young people to take advantage of apprenticeship schemes.

When she was studying drama at Aberystwyth University, 26 year old Emily Owen from Gwynedd had never given a career in dentistry a second thought. She only started working in the industry when her mother, an adviser at the local job centre, told her about a vacancy at a practice in Penrhyndeudraeth. Emily started the six month placement and was offered the opportunity to extend her stay at Oasis Dental Care. Emily was eager to learn more and began an 18 month apprenticeship programme organised by training provider Tooth Fairies. Now, she’s a level 3 qualified dental nurse and is hoping that other young people will be inspired by her story.

After finishing her training, Emily relocated to Swansea and took up the position of dental nurse at Mumbles Dental and Cosmetic Suite.

Emily said she was reluctant to apply for the placement at first, as she had never even thought about working in dentistry and hadn’t considered doing an apprenticeship. Like many graduates, she assumed that getting a job would be the next step, but she’s incredibly glad that she took the plunge and is really pleased with how her life has panned out. She’s learned on the job and now has hopes to further her career. Next year she plans to do an X-ray course and she also wants to complete advanced training in oral education.
