Dental implants should replace more common dental treatment

Dental patients should give up on decaying teeth and replace them with dental implants, the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) has said.
It was often the case that a dentist would do their utmost to uphold a patient’s teeth by way of a range of treatments, such as root canals and dental crowns, but the AAID believes such techniques should be abandoned.
John Minichetti, speaking on behalf of the AAID, said: “There really is no justification for undergoing multiple endodontic and periodontal procedures, and enduring the pain and financial burden, to save a diseased tooth.”
There is no denying that dental treatments such as root canals can sometimes be limited in their lasting effect, with further dental problems often developing.
Mr Minichetti added: “Our patients expect restorative dental procedures to make their smiles more attractive and long-lasting. In most cases, implants deliver the best results, as the ultimate goal is to achieve an aesthetic and functional restoration for years to come.”
Research recently published in the Journal of Implantology adds support to such claims, with 98 per cent of single-tooth dental implants found to be successful after seven years.
This is in comparison to first-time root canals which, according to the American Academy of General Dentistry, fail 5 per cent of the time.
Though there is evidence to support such claims there is no denying that dental implants can be quite costly in themselves. Also, the idea of allowing your teeth to go to waste is not an appealing one.
