A dental hygienist from Brighton is pounding the pavements in a bid to raise money for good causes.

Christina Chatfield, from the Dental Health Spa, is preparing to tackle a 500 mile walk from Scotland to Brighton to raise money for the British Dental Health Foundation and Heart Your Smile. The money raised for the BDHF will be put towards their annual Mouth Cancer Action Month campaign, which aims to raise awareness of mouth cancer.

Christina will be averaging around 20 miles per day on her trek from Kirriemuir to Brighton; she will start the journey on Monday 19th May and will complete the challenge on the 19th June when she reaches the Big Beach Café on the seafront for a well-deserved refreshing drink.

Christina is walking alone, but she is encouraging fellow dentists, dental nurses, hygienists and members of the public to join her for as long as they wish; any support and well wishes will be gratefully received and Christina has already thanked her colleagues and patients for their messages of support and kind donations.

Christina said that it is important that people are made aware of the dangers of mouth cancer, which is affecting more and more people in the UK. Recent statistics show that cancer survival rates are increasing year on year, but this is not the case for mouth cancer, as most cases are diagnosed at a late stage due to the fact that people are unaware of the warning signs and causes.

Christina is hoping that her walk will help to get people talking about mouth cancer, so that more lives can be saved in the future.
