Dental Hygiene Camp Makes A Difference In Mumbai

A group of young dentists helped to spread smiles in Mumbai by hosting a dental hygiene camp for children with special needs and their teachers.

Smiles32, a social project set up a group of young dentists, hosted the event in Navi Mumbai; the aim of the project is to raise awareness of oral health issues and oral hygiene.

The hygiene camp was held on the 7th October at the Helen Keller Institute for Deaf and Deaf and Blind. Dentists, Dr Manasi Bhargava, Dr Nisha Patel and Dr Bijal Jakharia performed routine examinations on 18 deaf and deaf-blind children, as well as 22 teachers, members of staff and trainees.

The dentists had to communicate with carers and teachers as the children were unable to watch brushing demonstrations and listen to advice about brushing and healthy eating; the carers can now ensure that they look after the children’s teeth as well as possible.

Smiles32 is hoping to expand in the future to treat more underprivileged and disabled children and spread the message about oral hygiene beyond Mumbai.
