Dental Firm Job Loss Concerns taken to Scottish Parliament

The case of Peri-dent, the dental firm that has announced possible job losses, has been taken to the Scottish Parliament.

Last week, executives at the dental floss manufacturing firm announced plans to move production to Malaysia and said that the move was unavoidable due to losses at the Scottish plant.

Borders MSP Christine Grahame has now referred the case to Holyrood to see what kind of help may be available for workers at the plant. Peri-dent will continue to operate at the plant but the manufacturing jobs will be lost and it is estimated that around 100 jobs will go. Ms Grahame has contacted John Swinney, the Finance Secretary to see what can be done about the situation and she hopes that the issue will be debated in the near future. Mr Swinney has contacted the company and officials, who are hoping to discuss the matter with company representatives at the end of the week.

The plant has been running at a loss for some time now and representatives from Peri-dent started consulting with staff over the issue of a possible move to Malaysia. Bosses at the company say that they have no option but to move because of the financial situation, which they say has no chance of improving if the manufacturing division stays in Scotland.

Leader of the Scottish Borders Council, David Parker, said that he would do everything possible to avoid job losses.
