Dental fees to increase in Malaysia, Government confirms

The Malaysian Government has confirmed that dental fees for treatment provided by government-run clinics will increase.

Director-general of the Health Ministry, Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah confirmed that dental charges will increase in the near future; however, the increases will not apply for those on low incomes. The government is committed to subsidising dental care for those who cannot afford to pay for treatment, and services will continue to be heavily subsidised for certain patients once the new charges come into play.

The Malaysian system divides patients into classes. Those in the first and second classes will be required to pay the new charges for dental treatment, while the government will continue to assist those in the third class.

There were plans to introduce the new fees in February; however, the date has been moved back to the 1st March.

Dr Hisham stated that patients who could not afford the proposed treatment fees would continue to receive the best possible standards of care at an affordable cost.

This marks the first time there have been increases in dental charges for a long time. The new fees come in the wake of a review of current dental services across the country.
