Dental Experts Recommend Chewing Sugar-Free Gum for Healthy Smiles

Dental experts are encouraging people to incorporate chewing sugar-free gum into their dental care regime in a bid to reduce the risk of dental decay and gum disease.

Dr Barry Cockcroft, England’s former chief dental officer, suggested that chewing sugar-free gum after eating helps to reduce the risk of cavities significantly. Research shows that chewing gum helps to stimulate saliva production and weaken harmful plaque acids. Dr Cockcroft said that chewing gum is an effective measure for all generations and encouraged older people to change their perspectives of gum. Many older people think of chewing gum as something young people do and there is a belief that it is a bad habit. If you chew discreetly in the comfort of your own home, you can enjoy the many dental health benefits, as well as feeling more comfortable than you would in public.

Dr Cockcroft was eager to highlight the advantages of including chewing gum in an oral health routine, but he also wanted to stress that chewing gum should never replace brushing or flossing. It should be used as part of a daily regime, which also includes at least two minutes of brushing each morning and evening. Regular dental checks are also essential for good oral health.

Research carried out by mydentist revealed that most people are unaware of the potential dental benefits of chewing sugar-free gum. In a survey of 750 people, 73 percent did not chew sugar-free gum on a regular basis.
