Dental Expert Explains How to Whiten Your Teeth by Changing Your Diet

Most people admit that they would like whiter, brighter teeth, but you don’t have to invest hundreds of pounds in professional treatments. According to leading dental experts, you can eat your way to a brighter, whiter smile.

Dr Anthony Zybutz, from the TDC Implant Centre in Harley Street, claims that changing the diet can help to make the teeth look whiter. Some foods are natural cleaning agents, while others have antibacterial properties, which help to reduce the risk of decay and gum disease.

Dr Zybutz recommends including hard, crunchy fruits and vegetables in your diet, such as celery, carrots and apples. These foods work to scrub the teeth as you chew, as chewing produces a lot of saliva. This also helps to prevent gum inflammation and reduces the risk of decay and enamel wear. Hard cheese is another good choice because it has a high pH value and the chewing action stimulates saliva secretion.

Citrus fruits and strawberries clean the teeth as you eat, and strawberries are particularly good for oral health because they contain an enzyme called malic acid, which increases saliva production. Pineapple also contains bromelain, which is a natural compound that cleanses and reduces the risk of inflammation.

Foods to avoid for white teeth include blueberries, blackberries, coffee, tea, wine and cola. Dr Zybutz also recommended drinking water with every meal and throughout the day.
