A dental duo is preparing to take on a grueling challenge to raise money for the British Heart Foundation. Katie and Andy Wallwork, of Thornhill Dental Practice in West Yorkshire, are planning to scale Mount Kilimanjaro in September in the hope of raising thousands of pounds for the charity.

Andy and Katie decided to take on the challenge in memory of a close friend, who sadly passed away in 2010. Tony Johnston was just 45 when he had a heart attack whilst travelling back from Spain, where he had been holidaying with his wife and two sons. Tony was airlifted to a hospital in France but he died. Andy said that the news came as a complete shock, as Tony was so young and he was fit and active.

Tony’s wife, Sally, has already raised £20,000 for the British Heart Foundation and she is hoping to add another £10,000 to the total; Sally will be joining Andy and Katie, along with other members of her family, for the Kilimanjaro trek in memory of Tony.

Andy said that Tony had always wanted to climb Kilimanjaro and the couple did not think twice when Sally contacted them with the idea of completing the challenge to raise money for charity. Andy and Katie are keen climbers and have been walking on a regular basis since completing the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge last year.

Andy said that he expects the climb to very tough, especially towards the top where the air is very thin but the couple is looking forward to doing something positive in Tony’s memory.
