A husband and wife team from Stafford have helped people in need, on a Moroccan mercy mission.

Richard Howarth and his wife Jeni travelled to Morocco at the end of September to help people in a remote fishing village near the Rif Mountains.

Richard and Helen joined up with a team of volunteers to work for the charity, Dental Mavericks and provide much-needed dental care for more than 100 children in the village. The aim of the mission was to screen children and provide urgent pain relief. The team had basic equipment, which was provided by Dentaid and Henry Schein and they also took time to talk to children about oral health and oral hygiene. Dentaid also provided posters, which contained information about brushing your teeth and taking care of your teeth and gums, with the educational material written in French, which is many of the childrens’ second language.

The team got together in Southern Spain before making the short journey to the coastal town of El Jabah in Morocco. During their stay, the dental team was honoured to meet the health minister for the district.

For the vast majority of the children, this was the first time they had seen a dentist and many were suffering from decay and other oral health problems. Dental Mavericks is planning future trips to finish the job started by the Howarths and their fellow volunteers.
