Dental charity appeals for more volunteers to provide free checks for children

A dental charity is appealing for volunteer dentists to come forward to provide free checks for children.

The Dental Wellness Trust, which is based in London, is providing free dental check-ups for primary school children who cannot get appointments with local dentists. The charity has recently worked with Waulud Primary School and Nursery in Luton as part of its Livesmart Dental Care scheme, providing more than 250 children with free care in a single day in July.

As the demand for dental services increases, the charity is asking volunteers to offer their time to support future projects. The Livesmart Dental Care programme is designed to support children and their families and help them to make positive choices to reduce the risk of dental health issues. Tooth decay is currently the leading cause of hospital admissions among UK children.

Founder of the charity, Dr Linda Greenwall, said that the “impact of poor oral health on the quality of life is of urgent importance.” She described programmes like the Livesmart Dental Care initiative as “vital” to provide “essential treatment, interventions and preventative advice” and “reduce the risk in later life of chronic diseases.”

Anyone who wishes to find out more or volunteer to help out with the programme is encouraged to email [email protected].
