Women receiving dental treatment prior to and during their pregnancies had a significantly lower occurrence of low birth weight infants and pre-term births those that did not have any dental treatment prior to or during their pregnancies. This record review research was performed by Aetna and the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, from January, 2003 to September, 2006. Researchers studied dental and medical insurance information available for 29,000 women who were pregnant that had Aetna dental and medical insurance coverage, to try to decide if there was a relationship between adverse pregnancy outcomes and dental treatment. Additional studies are required, however this study showed that dental care had protective effects in terms of adverse pregnancy outcomes in those seeking dental care
