Dental academy opens its doors to patients

A brand new dental academy in Portsmouth has opened its doors and is encouraging new patients to register.

The new nine million pound development will provide reduced rate care for thousands of patients and will be staffed by students from Portsmouth University and King’s College, London.

The new clinic is targeting patients who do not usually visit their dentist and those who cannot afford the dental treatment they need; the academy will offer free care for those most in need.

The clinic will also target patients who suffer from dental anxiety and dental phobia; staff are keen to encourage those who have been put off going to the dentist by negative experiences in the past and those who have avoided going to the dentist because they are embarrassed about the state of their teeth.

The director of the academy, John Weld, said that the staff and students were looking forward to reaching out into the local community and helping to engage people in oral health. He said that patients should not be worried about allowing students to treat them; the students are in their final year and are soon to qualify; they will also be supervised by trained professionals. Patients are advised that appointments may take a little longer than with normal dentists; however, this may be beneficial for patients who don’t like to be rushed.

If you are interested in registering with the new dental academy, contact the academy directly or call the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Dental Help Line.
